Nia (Shania) is our16 year old daughter.
She is our athlete. She plays volleyball, basketball, and runs track.
Last year in track she was messing around on the hurdles (which is not her event) and she tripped and fell on her wrist.  We had the athletic trainer look at it and he thought she just sprained it so she went on and finished track.  Then she went through the summer doing volleyball and basketball camps- she would complain that it hurt once in awhile, but she never said how much it hurt.  In about September she was at a volleyball tournament and she dove for the ball and came up crying- we figure she must have had a hair-line fracture before, but finished it off there.  We had our chiropractic friend x-ray it for us because we are self-employed and I had full-time at the school district, but last year they cut all the aides to part-time and took away all our benefits (no insurance!) so we took these x-rays to a football game and the sports trainer's friend who is an orthopedic surgeon looked at them and confirmed it was broke. (her scaphoid bone in her wrist)  He told us to let her finish out her volleyball season and then come in to see him.  He said she couldn't really hurt it anymore than what was already done.  We went in in November and he casted it for 4 months- all the while she played a season of basketball with a cast on.  He took the cast off in February and felt like it was healed- gave her the go-ahead to finish basketball season and go into club volleyball season.  When we went back for her 6-week check-up, it was re-broke and he then wanted us to see a bone specialist because the bone that was broke doesn't get much blood flow and looked like it was dying.   We saw a bone specialist, and he wanted to do surgery, but wanted half up front on the day of surgery which was $15,000!  Who can just come up with that kind of money???
We have been very challenged this year as my husband's father suffered a major heart attack in Aug. and it has left him with an anoxic brain injury- well, he was part owner in another business we had, and because of that we had to turn the business back over to the previous owner- BUT we had a second mortgage on our home for the business, so we are short selling our home this month- but the second mortgage is still coming after us for the remaining balance which is $90,000.
So, we have been so blessed to find Shriner's Hospital in Salt Lake- they first told us they couldn't help us, I don't think they believed us at first about this other doctor wanting so much money- I really think they must have called and found out it was true, so they made it work for us.  We have not had to come up with any money up front for Shriners- they did the surgery last month.  I don't know yet how much we will have to pay- but I'm sure it's not going to be $30,000!
I truly believe everything will work out somehow- I know that there are so many other people facing much worse situations than we are, and I would take my challenges over what they are going through!  I do believe that Heavenly Father is aware of our situation.  I know that He loves us and will not make us endure more than we are capable.  Our whole family's strength has been put to the test, but we wake up every morning and face the day presented to us.
I have been blessed with some AMAZING friends who without them, I don't know if I would have made it through these past couple of years.
As the old Hurricane High School is being torn down, I don't really have sad feelings about it because MY old school is now gone, but because "The Cave of Wonders" and other rooms that carry so much of my last 6 years of friendships and memories is gone- but we will make another "Cave of Wonders" and more memories!

20th Anniversary

I can't believe I have put up with this guy for 20 years!!! haha! We celebrated our 20-year anniversary on April 13, 2011

It kills me to look at these pictures and realize how young and immature we were- but I also look back at that time as so fun to be newly weds! The reception line The Winder family

What an amazing guy he is- I'm so glad I have put up with him for 20 years, and glad I have the opportunity to put up with him for eternity!

2010 State Volleyball

The cheerleaders made these signs and hung them in the front entrance of the school
Willie Billings came and gave a motivational speech to the girls- he showed them his state ring from his high school days, and passed it around for the girls to hold and look at- he did a really good job! (gave me cold chills)
Jody Rich orchestrated this send-off for the girls. It was awesome!! The whole school came out and lined the halls to wish the girls Good Luck!
Loading the bus to head for Orem- UVU
Team picture just before getting on the bus- what a great group of girls! This has been a fun year! I was a bit nervous at how the older girls would take to Nia- being a freshmen and playing on the varsity team. They were awesome to her! The seniors will be missed next year. We will have a young team- as we didn't have any juniors on the team... only 4 seniors, and the rest were sophmores and freshmen!
Goodie bag made by Kathleen Edwards for the girls
First game of state volleyball- against Bear River- we won!
Nia serving the ball
The team getting some rest and instruction during a time-out- we didn't take state, but we did super good for such a young and short team... we took 4th! I'm already excited for next year... I just love to watch volleyball- it is such an exciting game!

2010 Girls Camp

2010 Girls Camp was fun! This is the crew just before we got loaded up in vehicles to head up to Kolob for an eventful time!

Our shirts turned out so cute! We were waiting to go on stage for our skit. The theme this year was "Sailing Home"
The bishopric... Bishop stayed with us all week long. Chris and Brother Hooten came up Friday night and then came back up Saturday morning to rescue us- it rained Friday night- they barely made it out of there when they left that night so they came back Saturday and helped us pack up and get out of there before it started to rain again
Saturday morning as we were cleaning up- Shania is doing a wonderful job- as well as all the other girls! haha! They did help- I just caught them at a moment of goofing off!

2010 Senior Cruise

Chris and I went as chaperons on the Senior Cruise. It was not a sponsored trip through the High School- the kids had to sign up on their own and find their own chaperons. We took Jacob Pugh and Braden with us, Cheyanne Benson also rode down and back with us. We had tons of fun! All the kids were well-behaved, even the little delinquents!!! (due to a senior prank some of the boys were booked into jail and now have a criminal record)

The entertainment was always very good- they wouldn't let us take pictures so I only got a few of the shows...

Catalina Island

The "bruisers showed up" they rented bikes for $5 an hour and drove around Catalina Island- as much as they could see in an hour that is!

My favorite part was para-sailing on Catalina Island... it was so fun! They just let us up from the boat and brought us right back down to the boat- it was so smooth you didn't even know you were going up or coming down, and we didn't even get wet!!! We saw a pack of about 20 dolphins jumping and playing in the water while we were up there- our guides told us that was the first time they had seen dolphins all day!

The Cruise Ship at night looked amazing! Here's Jake Payne, Jordan Langston, Braden, and Ian Gates at "Formal Night"

In Ensenada we just got off the boat and shopped. I had a little shopping buddy: Cheyanne Benson, she had her list made up before hand and we found everything she needed and more!

Night time on the Ship

We loved to go to Karaoke after the shows... we even had some of our own celebrities sing: April Gates, Tyler Howard, and Brittney Stackhouse

Every night when we got back to the room the famous Carnival towel animals would be waiting for us along with an agenda for the next days activities.

I think everyone had a good time- we only had security come to our room once looking for Braden- he and Tim Long had gotten into a little yelling fight and the neighbors called in- they had to come and make sure Braden was OK and that Tim's story was true. They also had a "flashing" incident: one of the boys, Brecken, had gone out his cabin door with a robe on over his clothes and he "flashed" another boy down the hall- a 10 year old girl saw it and went crying to her dad- he came down and got in Kylynn Iverson's face yelling at him- security was called and all was calmed down. Kylynn and Anderson Rich really got into the "gambling" thing- they were winning way too much so they felt like they needed to keep going and winning! I don't know how they ended up doing, but at one time Kylynn was up like $150.

I really didn't take a whole lot of pictures- I'm sad about that now! Oh well!
